Synopsis

When a group of students crash land on an unknown island they soon discover that they are not alone. Shortly after, they are taken captive by a group of "Beast Folk," half human/half animal creatures, whom they come to learn are the creation of a mysterious person that the Beast Folk refer to as "the hand that wounds." This man's name is Dr. Moreau. He is a mad man scientist determined to perfect the human race. In need of knew specimens for his experimentation, Moreau is in search of a group of strong, young people. The deserted students' only hope is one of their own: a medical student Edward Pendrick, who through a series of unfortunate events is taken hostage by the mad scientist. Moreau intends to make Edward his new apprentice. Edward must work fast to save his friends before they are forced to "learn the law" and end up in Moreau's House of Pain. A mosh-posh of Frankenstein, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies, "Dr. Moreau Remix" is perfect for people who love a good horror story told in a truly unique and interesting way.
Production

"Dr. Moreau Remix" was produced in 2018 by the Maryland Ensemble Theater as part of its Summer Outreach Program. The show is unique in its non-linear storytelling. As the story unfolds, the Beast Folk layer in chanting and various language, all while moving choreographically. This stylized movement is critical to the flow of the story, and very much meant to be done with intention. Please note that this play contains depictions of violence, which is critical to the storytelling.
Casting
Dr. Moreau is designed for a large cast. Due to its mature content it is more fitting for college aged students. The cast has several principal characters and two different ensembles, the Beast Folk and the students. These ensembles can be as large as a director likes or as small. The script has character names assigned to the students, but these can be changed and lines can be divided based on cast.
